What can be done with YOUR brain?

Underlying Tech.
BMI (Brain Machine Interface)- a device which senses brain signals, and translates them to a machine in order to use the system with no other controlling mechanism, i.e. mouse, keyboard etc.
DARPA(Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency)- a government agency responsible for the development of countless weapons and other military projects. Often they simply provide money to companies already working on projects of interest.
Cyberkinetics- a technology company which creates BMIs.

Synthesis
The brain is the most complex computer known to man. It can perform countless calculations in a split second. However as time passes, the calculations are being counted. Thanks to advancements in cognitive science and BCIs (Brain Control Interface) the brain's potential is being tapped into; it can control computers, and even robotic arms. the brain can now be directly connected to a computer. Imagine the secrets of the brain being used to control any sort of artificial device. Our brains would become the ultimate source of power. Scary? You bet it is. The government has plans to use the new advancements in military applications. This could mean that, in the future, unmanned aircraft, even manned aircrafts, could be controlled only with the mind. The possibilities are as endless as the human imagination. This technology is not that far away. It has been put in use in human trials, and thanks to DARPA funding; this technology will soon become common place according to Moore’s law. Because BMI’s will soon become widely available we must begin to consider what using it would mean. If our computer picks up every single thought we have, we will have to learn to practice controlling our minds, we don’t always want the tune we have stuck in our head to start playing on a media player. As this technology develops, we have to look at who is funding it; the US government, military, and DARPA. This could lead to a whole new kind of warfare, one in which the human mind is the battlefield. It also could lead to human brains being used as computers. Information could be stored on Human brains, and then retrieved from a terminal else ware. Because of the development of Brain Machine Interfaces, the human mind will become the most valuable resource on the planet. Also, once we understand the human brain enough to interpret its signals, why couldn't we then use BMI, to manipulate those signals? Your BMI could be sent a message which causes the correct pathways in the brain to fire, giving you the thought of whatever the message might be.

SEI Analysis
People and Machines
This is a very crucial SEI to my articles. What will these machines do with our brains? Will it give us super powers? BMIs have only been tested for a very small amount of time. Nobody knows what the long term affects are of exposure of the brain to BMIs. BMI also help increase the effecency of computers, allowing for instant communication between the brain and the computer. If BMI's become wireless, than your brain could be attached to your computer 24/7, meaning you are never more than a thought away fom you computer or the news. This brings the relationship between humans and machines even closer. It becomes much harder for humans to distance them selves form technology. BMIs are very helpful for disabled people. many of them have difficulty controling their limbs to opperate a mouse or keyboard but thanks to BMI, they can have equality of access to computers and all their benefits. That is currently the projected use for BMIs, but this technology could have ramefacations far beyond allowing people with cerebral palsy to surf youtube, it an allow paraplegics to operate robotic limbs with thier minds, and computer voice synthesis could talk for someone who has a sore throat. No matter which way you look at it, BMI connects people and machines, with the power of the mind.

Privacy/Anonymity
As far as privacy and anonymity go, the primary concern is Mind reading. Mind reading was brought up in the second article, "Uncle Sam Wants Your Brain", and it will be discussed briefly in Control, but it is very pertinent to privacy/ anonymity as well. IF in the future people implant long term, wireless BMI in side their cranium, than that data stream could be hacked into. That means every single thought we have is broadcast for the world to see. Also in the future, BMI could be the primary way to communicate or locate someone. Your BMI becomes connected to your cellphone, home computer, and so when people call you, your BMI would inform you of the fact, and you could check your messages. Someone could choose not to use a BMI because of the privacy issues it brings. I would not blame them, not only will it reduce the risk of your thoughts being hacked, but often the world should not see what is going on inside your head. Also if the BMI of the future can manipulate your brain, then ads could be sent to you, and they might even be disguised as you own original thought. This is a very scary thought, that a computer could tell us what to do, and we would not know if it was us or the computer talking.

Control
One of the potential uses for this technology is mind reading, and while it is not fail proof; it still would be more accurate than a polygraph. If the government has the ability for mind control that could get really dangerous. They would be able to hack into our implanted chips to interrogate us. This violate our privacy, as well as a few amendments. Who ever has control over BMI which manipulate the brain, is in control of those brains, and has the power to feed them propaganda which they cannot ignore. Having the ability to control things with your mind could give a major boost to the person using it., but if a company makes the product very expensive, then they have control over the technology. In order to keep control in the peoples hands, the technology is going to have to develop so fast that the government versions are soon outdated. So then everyone will beable to read anothers thoughts. Parents could read their child's chip to see if they were lying about who broke the lamp, or even where they were. Who ever has control over mind reading, has access to total truth, or, at least what people know. But deception, lies and half truths will be impossible to tell to the person in control of mind reading technology.

No more hide and seek


Space, Near-Space and Airborne Sensors and Structures

New technology has been put into the works that will let US military personnel (war fighters) "to locate, track, and target adversary movements on the ground and in the air". This is to obtained by using C-Band SATCOM which is a form of electromagnetic communication between satellites. This will give the military a huge hand in combat because it will allow for them to see when missiles are being launched, land troops and vehicles, and air transports. This new technology will be used with space based radar that will enable "war fighters" a.k.a. soldiers to find and track enemies anywhere in the world hostile or not in the ground and in the air. The underlining technology in this project made up of C-Band SATCOM which is a commercial communications network, extremely large space apertures and structures, and this will allow for the development of "high performance space control sensors and systems". This kind of technology can and will allow for a person or government to be able to locate and target potentially dangerous missiles and vehicles allowing for a wide range of security that would not be available before this radar is released.
  • S.E.I.s
  • Integrity- The new sensors might lack integrity or will have some issues because if the signal between where the sensors are sending and where they are receiving is interrupted or sent to a different server the information a and technology could prove very dangerous to the army and American safety. If this information were to be leaked or hacked it could allow for the hackie to know secret army missions, who the U.S. is tracking and will allow the person to tamper with the information which could also lead to war trouble, and will also give them access to who and what the sensors will track next.
  • Security- The security that this will bring the U.S. can be enormous because it will allow us to be able to find and track any known terrorists and also help with any homeland security issues like illegal immigration. This technology will revolutionize the way that people will be located,tracked, and targeted. Here is an example: If a drug cartel was shipping a huge shipment of drugs into the U.S. and we were able to recognize one of the members it would allow us to find, track, and engage the target without them knowing. This also leaves the technology to be able to be used on civilians and "suspected" people.
  • Control- This new technology could be used to monitor the whole world if it were to be massively produced and the satellites were scattered. This gives a whole new meaning to "Big Brother". This sensor could be used to enforce the will of the government if it were used so, because it could be enhanced with a weapon that would allow the government to eliminate any person that was a "suspected" terrorist and no one would have any control over it. This could also be used to enforce people to act a certain way by making sure that anyone that stands out or acts up is punished.
Multipath Exploitation Radar Program
This program when it has successfully been completed will allow Airborne sensors to detect more information by allowing the sensor to see beyond the Line-of-Sight(LOS). This new technology will allow the US National Guard to be more precise with their examinations of battlefields and territories. This technology will open many doors that will allow for the military and other personnel to advance the technology of both radar and optic streaming. This technology is allowed to see past the LOS by allowing a lower aspect angle that will "greatly extend the persistent area of coverage". This new radar will also allow for the airborne sensor to detect and extract certain signatures on "targets". This radar uses Multipath which is when a radio signal is received and transmitted from multiple antennas. An example of this is if there is a search for a known criminal a police officer can release airborne sensors into the air and they are able to look into alleys and walk ways that would not be able to be seen from the sky by using a lower aspect angle and will be able to more effectively catch criminals.

  • Integrity- This radar lacks integrity because if the radio signal were to be intercepted the live optical stream could be watched from a place by a person that can enhance and even disrupt the optical feed by tampering with the visuals. This could also be an issue because all of the streams could be saved and if that was to be hacked the hackie would have information about all the places that the airborne sensor has been sent and all of the visuals it had collected.
  • Security- This radar could prove as a very useful and advanced security camera. The radar could be used to detect and alert authorities if a criminal were to be walking in the streets and it got a picture of his/her face it would be able to send the picture to the authorities and would be able to track him/her while the police got ready. This could also be an issue for security as well because if the technology were to put into the wrong hands then it would pose a threat to any enemy of the person with the control because it would allow them to be tracked.
  • Control- If the control of this radar was put into the wrong hands it could prove a massive threat t both national and personal security because anyone even the president could be tracked. This can also be an issue if the person in control abused their power and used the technology to track and search for anyone. A corrupt government could also use this technology to control the population and completely maintain control over behavior and actions of the people because they would be constantly monitored.

Detecting Bacteria With Electromechanical Cantilevers



SYNTHESIS OF ARTICLE
An engineer at Drexel University came up with a hand held device that can determine if something is containing any sort of bacteria. Regular devices to determine if E Coli. Is present will take up to 24 hours; the device created at Drexel only takes 10 minutes. With this device, meat suppliers can send their products out a day earlier than before, allowing them to supply more product and make more profit at a time. The “ Drexel “ device allows quick and easy diagnosis, letting business move along with their shipment. Also giving humans faster results on if they were to have a bacterial infection.
This device could eventually put scientists out of their job, by no longer needed a human taking up to 48 hours or longer to analyze a certain bacteria.

Synthesis:
For many people they have had to suffer with hearing loss and not being able to hear anything. There now has been a way created for them that is new and better. There used to be the big ear things on your ears that helped you hear. Now there is a brand new way of hearing. Anyone could say they can hear like a cricket.

The new technology is called artificial cricket hairs. They help a person to hear. It is uncertain how well they work yet. It is a brand new way of hearing and great news for people who don't want to use the old fashion hearing aide. The new cricket hair helps like a cricket hears.

A cricket hears with a certain part of its body and uses its hair on its body to reverberate and hear other things. With the reverberation people are now able to control some artificial cricket hair and use it in their ear to hear. It has been a great contribution to the world and to the deaf people so they can hear. It might be better for them hearing with the cricket ears than with the hearing aide because it is new and modeled after an actual living thing. It could help a whole lot with being able to hear.

If a person can't hear they should be able to use the artificial cricket hair. It has a sensor so a person could hear what is being said and pick up what is going on around the room. There is no reason why a person should not have new cricket hair. It will be able to help who lose their hearing or never been able to hear to be able to hear. It is an amazing achievement with how far sensory technology has come to helping people.

SEI Analysis:

Authenticity:
The artificial cricket hairs will be an amazing hit to the uniqueness to them. It is uncertain whether they help people who are majorly deaf or only a little bit. It would be interesting to know if there would be an issue on if there is only a certain kind of deaf people who can have these cricket hairs. If it was for everyone than it would be excellent. There is a chance that they were designed special for a deaf person who has gone completely or almost completely deaf.

The best way to tell is if a person would be able to tune the cricket hairs to a certain degree and if they could turn them on and off. If they stayed on after implanted or given to them than it would be a whole new life for them. If a person could hear then they would experience all the noises of the night and what happens when they are asleep. It could be a better experience for all elderly people to be able to hear so they do not have to yell because they don't think they are talking loud enough. It would be a relief and lessen the strain on their voice box if they could talk normal and be able to hear better.

When a person is able to hear better they do not know what they have been missing until they do. If a person never experienced hearing in their whole life it would be an interesting way to learn in the world through a whole new experience that was given to them. It would be uplifting and helpful. If the authenticity is for someone in general that would be a good thing to have them individualized instead of making them all the same for everyone. That would probably cause problems.

Equality of Access:
As a new technology the artificial cricket hairs are probably going to be a problem with equality of access. It is most likely going to cost money and a lot of money at that because it is a new product in the market. If it was expensive it would limit the buyers. If there were some buyers who liked it the price might stay the same. If barely anyone bought the product then the price might go down a little bit.

If it was a free trial given to children then it would be evident that the product should be sold and can be sold to anyone. Giving it to children at a young age is the best that can be done because they could come back for renewals or better ones. If the first one is free then the next one will be better and might be more expensive than the first one. That would be able to let the people try it out and let them see if it works. If it is a low income family than it is up to the company what to do with the product. There might be able to make a scholarship to needy children with hearing problems if they child needs the second pair because the first ones were used up.

If the artificial cricket hairs are implanted into a person's head and doesn't need anything else besides that then the company would not make any profit if they let people have it for free. A price would be bargained for and would probably be higher than the old fashioned hearing aides. They would in return be better than the old fashioned hearing aides. The equality of access in not certain, but is unlikely. If it was equal there would be no profit and no more new technology.

People and Machines:
Man and machine have a chance of combining. With the artificial cricket hair it might be able to be combined with actual body and not replaced. It could be updated maybe automatically like a computer would be. It would be neat if it could update so nicely. If this technology can be combined with a person then it will be man and machine working together. The one problem is if the machine stops working will the human still function without it. There is a possibility that it could connect that deeply, but it is not very likely.

If this sensor technology is not combined with the human figure than what will the ear be like after is has technology so that it can hear without being updated or looked at weirdly. It could be soon after this invention there could be another one greater than it that will allow a person to be able to hear and have normal check ups after it being implanted. It could be helpful. A young person would have hearing for a lot longer than they would normally. Elderly folk would be able to hear long after they are dead because of the technology with their brain combined to their body.

It could be a problem with the public if a person for the first time got an ear implant or something similar so they could hear. A person and doctor might be judged as unethical because it has never been done before. If it is a problem with the public it is there choice what to do about it. If a person would like to try and hear again then they might be willing to take the measures of implanting an artificial ear in their body. It would then not be an issue for them.

Synthesis:

This new technology is referred to as smart dust. It is able to do many things. The dust is able to sense things and send information back to a certain place. It can warn of many things and change depending on the desired affect. The smart sensor was invented to be used for making smart decisions and what to expect from a place.

The smart sensors are able to identify almost any material or element in the world. It can record vast information about the temperature or what it is in or around. It can test to see what is healthy or what is dangerous. It is a new precaution that people can use to tell if a place is safe or dangerous. If there is a poisonous gas in a certain area it will warn a person and let them know to stay away from that area.

For example, if there was an earthquake and people had been in the earthquake then smart sensors could be drizzled around the area of where the impact was. After a while a reading would come back. It would tell the people where the other people in danger are. With the temperature feature on the smart sensor it could probably detect where a big grow of people are from the higher temperature. That way lots of people could be saved. It would result in not as many causalities and less injuries. For people it would be a savior of their lives.

The new smart sensor technology could also probably predict what was going to happen in the whether or a certain period of time. If it picks up that it will rain and tells the people then the people will be able to go inside and not have to deal with it. It would especially be nice if it warned the people in there were any toxic chemicals in the rain that might hurt them, like acid rain, has harsh chemicals. After a while people could start testing all different kinds of materials to see if they are worn new or dangerous in any way. It would be helpful and safe.


SEI Analysis:

Privacy/Anomymity:
After a while the code to track a person will be possible. If a person wanted they could stick a smart sensor on them and probably get a lot of information from them. Many predators in the world are looking for where a person is who is cute to get them. A person could find someone else if they chose to. There would be a problem with privacy and anonymity.

If a cute girl where being followed she would notice. With this new kind of device she could be tracked and meet up the tracker somewhere or another without knowing it. With knowing her exact skin DNA the predator would be able to track her find her when she least expects it. That would end badly. There needs to be a more anatomist way of following patterns and not following humans.

Privacy and Anonymity would be a problem with the people because they would feel that they were being watched if they new about the sensors. It might be for their own good, but it is unnecessary to follow people in such a manner. A person could become more anonymous with the more people they see. That way a person is not centered in and trapped for what they have done if they did something wrong. The smart sensors would be easily spread and cover up the animosity of a person in a crowd. A certain protection is welcome when in a crowd and joined by others. If the person was alone and did not spread the smart sensors then there would be more of a problem with the safety of the person.

Intellectual Property:
In the world today there are many crimes and stealing. There is a way to steal almost anything possible. It could be anywhere and if a person wants it enough they will have it. Intellectual property would be a issue when dealing with smart senors. They are very highly helpful and well smart.

When a person patents their property no one is allowed to steal that idea for a sum of years if ever. If another person were to find a way around buying one and making their own it would be much easier. A person would reverse engineer the smart sensor they could change it a little bit and create their own. It would be stealing their intellectual property and infringing on their rights. It would be very upsetting when their would be tons on market when it was someone's original idea to do it so they could have the fame and recognition.

With stealing in this world it would not be unheard of if someone tried to reverse engineer the smart sensor technology. It might take a while, but it could be possible for another person to invent a similar thing that was basically the same idea. It would be very unfair to the original person who made it, but they must have not worked as hard as they should have on it or someone would not have been able to decode it so easily. A person should have his rights and if another was caught using a similar technique then he should be penalized. It is a problem that must be dealt with.

Control:
When discussing smart sensors there is much talk of what is going to be done with them, but who exactly will be using them? It seems unclear of what or who will be in control of these smart sensors. If it is everyday people then it will cause other social and ethical issues to arise. If it isn't them it must be the government who would be watching. With the government watching it would be for the safety of the people making sure that no one gets hurt.

The government having the control of all the smart sensors would end up leaving the public even more open to being seen. A person could be wrongly accused for something if one of the sensors around him had been around someone else during a certain time. There would be lots of mistakes that would be caused if the sensors were only controlled by the government. If the smart sensors are used for the protection of the people if there was an earthquake than it would be reasonable for them to have some smart sensors to search for the people. That way less people would be likely to die.

If everyone could control the new smart sensor technology it would also lead to other problems of animosity and security. A person should have some sensor technology if they have a legal use for it in research or study. It could be a special right for a scientist to have and use to conduct surveys and tests on people with their permission. With them having control all people would get a chance to interact with the smart sensor technology and not be rejected and unknowing of what it is. Control with few people would be ideal.

Must protect our borders

Synthesis:
The world today has had problems with smuggling and terrorism. There is now new technology that helps decrease that. With the senors that are being used a variety of different issues can be covered. The sensors can cover very main things from chemical to explosive. It could help us secure our borders and protect our people.

The U.S. can now be better protected with these new sensors that can sense chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive materials. These sensors have started to be used to sense anything with any of those materials. It could be protecting our safety. That would be a leading thing in making sure that the borders are safe and that no one accidentally purchases anything that is illegal or dangerous. If one of the materials is found it can be safely checked and exposed of.

The materials could try and pass the borders with illicit trade. It could be on purpose and for the money being the only reason to bring these materials over the border. If a person were to get caught with these goods they could then be fined and sent to jail decreasing the likeliness that they will come through the border again. With each person who is caught doing illicit trade with illegal materials than the more the U.S. is protected. It will make the U.S. feel superior and proud to have such good technology.

Without this technology there could be more smuggling and explosives that would endanger the U.S. citizens. The protection that is given is an enormous comfort to the lives and the borders. Also with the new sensor technology they are able to sense the material from a distance without having to risk there lives up close. If it was suspected a vehicle had any of the materials they security could ask and see what the person has. It will protect the borders and make everyone feel much safer traveling to the U.S.

SEI Analysis:

Policies and Standards:
With new technology on the borders it would soon become a standard. If one border or port has it then another might try and use it if it works. Soon it would become almost a standard to protect the people in America. It will be a protection area where the U.S. can control its borders. With more protection the more it will be needed at all borders and ports.

When protecting the borders becomes a standard for the U.S. to have then it will become a policy. With a policy in place it will protect people's rights and keep them safe from harm. There shall not be any illicit trade or any explosives coming in to harm anyone. The policy and standard norm will have new sensor technology protection making sure that no one is harmed. If security is breached the senors will go off and people will know to protect themselves.

With the new security people will be able to be protected fully from their borders. No one will be able to get any illicit trade in or out. The protection from the new policy will guarantee a new comfort for the people. There will be less danger for the U.S. and harder ways for foreigners to hurt our defense. The nation will be protected from all sides and ready for anything. There will never be another bomb from anywhere else again. With new technology there will be new improvements every few years. The security will be strict and will eventually be able to identify everything that a person gets and has with them. Support the borders for security.


Security:
To protect the U.S. borders there is only one way to turn to. Security will protect and defend U.S. rights. The new sensor technology will be able to establish security over all the borders and ports. With it the people will feel happy and safe. The sensor technology will be able to provide security for all measures, entering and exciting the continental U.S. The new technology will finally save the U.S.

The security and sensors will provide needed protection at ports and borders to make sure that everyone is well protected. With the new sensors it will be able to pick up on any materials that may contain certain elements that can be deadly or dangerous to the human beings. The border patrol can pull them over and check whether the materials inside are safe or not. If they are unsafe then the patrol will not let the material enter. If it is safe it was only an error. It is better to know if something is dangerous to protect the citizens.

The U.S. citizens are the main concern of why there should be more security on the borders and ports. With the new sensory technology the people will not need to worry as much about who passes. The other thing is, if a U.S. citizen bought something that contain a certain material they would have to get rid of it before entering the U.S. border for their own safety and the safety of others. It will end up being better for everyone to be safe and not allow certain harmful materials into the U.S. The security will have very good protection with this new sensory technology to help them.

Reliablility:
At this current state the reliability of the new sensor technology is unknown the only way to figure out if it is safe or not is to test it. The reliability with the sensor will be whether a person can keep it under control and knows how to use it. If the sensor is hacked then the company, MITRE, would be guilty for the faultiness, but will be able to redeem themselves if they create a better one that is not as easily hacked and is more specific in code. With technology getting better and better every year and a half or so, the sensory technology should be updated about that often to keep it new and fresh. It will help greatly with improvements to it every two years or so.

A problem with the reliability might be if the technology doesn't sense the materials in the vehicle or on the person. There could be some way of shielding the sensor or making the material invisible to it. It would result in the reliability of the sensor if it could sense the material or not. If many people had gotten through with the materials that were supposed to be checked the product should be updated to be better used by the border patrol.
